Google Business Profile Checklist for Brampton Businesses

Why your Google Business Profile matters
When someone in Brampton searches for a plumber, a barber or a car wash, Google shows a map with a few businesses before any regular results. Those listings come from Google Business Profile. For many local businesses, that map is where customers decide who to call.
The profile is free. Setting it up properly takes an afternoon, and it's one of the highest-value things a local business can do for its visibility. This checklist walks through it in order, with notes for service-area businesses that travel to their customers.
Step 1: Claim or create your profile
- Search your business name on Google Maps. If a listing already exists, choose the option to claim it rather than creating a second one.
- If nothing exists, go to Google Business Profile and create one with the Google account you want to own it. Use a business account you control, not one belonging to an employee or a marketer.
- Enter your business name exactly as it appears on your sign, invoices and website. Don't add keywords or city names to the name. It breaks Google's guidelines and can get the profile suspended.
Step 2: Set it up as a service-area business (if you travel to customers)
If customers don't come to you, you're a service-area business. That covers cleaners, handymen, contractors, mobile mechanics, mobile barbers and anyone working from home.
- When asked if customers visit your location, choose no. This hides your address from the public.
- Add the areas you serve, such as Brampton, Mississauga, Caledon and Vaughan. Google allows up to 20, and recommends keeping them within about two hours' drive of your base.
- List real areas you actually cover, not every city in Ontario.
If you have a storefront, like a barbershop on Queen Street or a dealership on Eastern Avenue, show your address so customers can navigate to you.
Step 3: Verify the profile
Google won't show an unverified profile properly. It will offer one or more verification methods, which can include a video recording showing your business, tools and location, a phone call or text, or email. Follow the one it offers and keep the proof ready: signage, branded vehicle or tools, and something that shows you're in Brampton.
Verification can take a few days. Don't make big edits while it's pending.
Step 4: Choose the right categories
Your primary category is one of the strongest signals on the profile. Pick the most specific one that describes your main business: “Barber shop” rather than “Beauty salon”, or “Used car dealer” rather than “Car dealer” if that's what you are.
Then add a few secondary categories for other real services. A window cleaner might add gutter cleaning service and pressure washing service. Don't add categories for things you don't do.
Step 5: Fill in every detail
- Phone number: a local number that you answer. Use the same number as your website.
- Website: link to your homepage, or to a location page if you have several locations.
- Hours: accurate regular hours, plus holiday hours before every long weekend.
- Services: add each service by name with a short description and price if you publish one.
- Booking link: if you use Booksy, Fresha or another booking app, add the link.
- Attributes: tick the ones that apply, like online estimates or wheelchair accessible.
Step 6: Write a clear business description
You get up to 750 characters. Lead with what you do, where, and for whom, in plain words. Mention your main services and areas naturally. Don't stuff keywords, add links or use all caps.
Keep the key facts identical to your website's About page. When Google and AI assistants see the same description of your business in several places, they trust it and repeat it.
Step 7: Add real photos
Profiles with real photos look more trustworthy and get more clicks. Add your logo and a cover photo, then photos of your work, your team, your vehicle or storefront, and before and after shots. Skip stock photos. Add new ones regularly, even just a couple a month.
Step 8: Build a review habit
Reviews affect both your ranking and whether people choose you. The number of reviews matters, and so does how recent they are.
- Copy your profile's review link and send it to customers right after a job goes well.
- Put a QR code at the counter or on your invoice.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and within a few days.
- Never buy reviews, write your own or offer discounts in exchange. It breaks Google's rules and can get reviews removed or the profile suspended.
Step 9: Match your website and listings
Google cross-checks your business details across the web. Your name, address (if shown) and phone number should be identical on your profile, your website and directories like Yelp, Yellow Pages, Bing Places and Apple Business Connect. Fix old listings with an outdated number or address.
Your website should back up the profile too: a page for each main service, your service area named clearly, and local business schema. That's built into every site on the web design in Brampton page.
Step 10: Keep it active
Update your hours before holidays, add new photos, post occasional updates about offers or recent jobs, and check your profile every month for edits suggested by the public. Google sometimes accepts suggested changes automatically, so keep an eye on it.
Common mistakes that hold Brampton profiles back
- Two profiles for one business. Duplicates split your reviews and confuse Google. Merge or remove the extra one.
- A vague primary category.“Contractor” loses to “Flooring contractor” when someone searches for flooring.
- A home address on display. If customers don't visit you, hide it and use service areas instead.
- Stale hours. Nothing loses a customer faster than showing up to a closed door on a holiday Monday.
- Ignoring reviews. An unanswered bad review looks worse than the review itself.
The quick checklist
- Profile claimed with a Google account you control
- Business name exactly as on your sign, with no keywords added
- Address hidden and service areas added (service-area businesses)
- Profile verified
- Most specific primary category, plus relevant secondary ones
- Phone, website, hours, services and booking link filled in
